The “ASTRA” Museum of Traditional Folk Culture in Sibiu is the largest open-air museum in Romania and one of the most important in Europe, dedicated to traditional Romanian folk culture, especially that of the pre-industrial period. Located in Dumbrava Forest, south of Sibiu, the museum covers an area of approximately 96 hectares and includes hundreds of authentic structures, such as farmsteads, workshops, and traditional technical installations.
The exhibitions are organized thematically and illustrate the main activities of rural society: food production, processing of raw materials, transportation, domestic crafts, and community construction. Visitors can observe firsthand the way of life in a Romanian village, through a faithful recreation of the environment and traditional technologies.
The museum is part of the ASTRA National Museum Complex, the successor to an initiative cultural initiatives begun at the beginning of the 20th century by the ASTRA Association, with the goal to preserve and promote the ethnographic heritage of Romania.
Through its collections and through cultural activities organized (festivals, workshops, demonstrations of crafts), the museum is not just merely an exhibition space, but also an interactive one, which promotes cultural identity and Romanian traditions in a lively and educational manner.
Thus, the Museum ASTRA represents a major landmark for the preservation and presentation of rural heritage, offering a comprehensive and authentic picture of traditional life in Romania.
